In partnership with Global Changemakers and the University of Notre Dame, we're spearheading a Micro Community Garden initiative to empower South Bend residents and students to grow their own food.
This six-week program combines hands-on gardening with sustainability education to address food insecurity in a city nationally recognized as a food desert.
Collaborative Approach
Bringing together university resources and community knowledge to create sustainable solutions.
Educational Focus
Providing practical skills and knowledge that participants can use for years to come.
Sustainability Centered
Creating systems that benefit both people and planet through responsible resource use.

The Challenge We're Addressing
Food Desert Reality
South Bend is nationally recognized as a food desert, with limited access to fresh, nutritious foods for many residents.
Ultra-Processed Dependency
Reliance on ultra-processed foods has led to negative health outcomes and nutritional deficiencies in the community.
Knowledge Gap
Many residents lack the skills and resources to grow their own food, despite interest in more sustainable options.
Expected Outcomes
Nutritional Impact
Each participant prepares at least three meals using their own garden produce, improving dietary diversity and nutrition.
Community Building
Strengthened community ties between South Bend residents and Notre Dame students through collaborative learning and shared experiences.
Awareness & Education
Enhanced awareness of the link between food, health, and sustainability, creating long-term behavioral change
Why It Matters
This initiative demonstrates how small-scale, accessible solutions can have a big impact. By equipping participants with the skills and tools to grow their own food, the Learn + Do Micro Community Garden advances multiple Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG 2: Zero Hunger
Increasing access to nutritious food through local production and education.
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Promoting healthier diets and active lifestyles through gardening.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities
Creating green spaces and community connections in urban environments.
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption
Teaching sustainable food practices and reducing food waste.
